Sheriff William Honsal with the Humboldt County Sheriffs Office (HCSO), released a video detailing the incidents which occurred in Eureka on January 22.

The Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) says, due to the length of the standoff, some of the body-worn-cameras officers were wearing lost battery.

Officers with the Eureka Police Department (EPD) first responded to a home, in the 1400 block of Union Street, for reports of a child with a cut on his neck, allegedly caused by Daniel Martinez.

Martinez then barricaded himself inside, where police say he also held multiple people hostage—most of which were children.

After several hours long stand-off, four people were released then treated for injuries, although officers say Martinez remained inside.

Officials say he refused commands to come out, which is when they deployed pepper balls, causing Martinez as well as officers to cough.

After opening the door, officers say Martinez quickly approached them with a large knife, before he was shot then killed.
