Baltimore bridge collapse: White House gives no clear timeline for structure replacement

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg gave no clear timeline for replacement of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, MD, after a container ship crashed into it causing it to collapse.

Buttigieg noted, however, that the bridge had taken five years to construct though he said that’s not necessarily indicative of the time it would take to rebuild.

There are still questions surrounding the condition of the portions of the bridge still standing, and the infrastructure that is underwater, he said.
“The rebuilding will not be quick, or easy, or cheap — but we will get it done,” he said.

Meanwhile, Coast Guard Vice Admiral Peter Gautier sought to assure Americans that the damaged ship poses no threat to public safety.
He said the ship holds over 1.5 million gallons of fuel and more than 50 of the cargo containers on board contain hazardous material, but that the vessel is stable and not a safety risk.
