Have you ever tried to get away from it all, gotten away from it all, then just kept getting away from it all until eventually your family thinks you’re dead and you’re reduced to living off tree bark? This man from Chukotka Autonomous District did.

A 70-year-old avid nature lover and fisherman, he was no stranger to the outdoors, nor his wife a stranger to his frequent fishing and hiking trips. He would often go and stay in a small, secluded lodge for long periods, although never for an entire winter. However, after five months, she began to have her suspicions. She contacted local police, who performed some less-than-local police work and found him 150 kilometers away from his village. He had very little food, just a few fish he had caught and some tree bark he had been able to scavenge. The cold had prevented his return journey, and, were it not for the timely arrival of the police, he likely would have starved in mere days.

However, as an experienced outdoorsman, he was no worse the wear for his ordeal. The police took him home, where his wife thanked them for their service, and presumably let out the loudest ‘just what time do you call this?’ in recorded marital history.
