Why Israel Is So Determined To Launch An Offensive In Rafah
Israel's steadfast determination to launch a ground offensive against Hamas in Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city, has set off global alarms. Can Israel achieve "total victory" against Hamas without entering Rafah? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists it's necessary. With military plans approved, the focus shifts to the estimated 1.4 million Palestinians squeezed into Rafah. How will Israel navigate the densely populated civilian areas during its offensive? Amid concerns from allies like the U.S., pressure mounts for heightened precautions to protect civilian lives. The majority of these Palestinians are displaced by ongoing conflicts, living in overcrowded tent camps and packed apartments. What measures will be taken to avoid civilian casualties in such densely populated areas? Prime Minister Netanyahu has made a decision to send a delegation to Washington in recognition of international scrutiny. The question however remains. How will Israel's plans be received by the Biden administration amidst growing humanitarian concerns? Stay tuned as we delve into matters arising.
We begin by understanding why Rafah is so important. Since Israel declared war in response to Hamas’ deadly cross-border attack on Oct. 7, Prime Minister Netanyahu has underscored a central goal: to dismantle the Islamic group’s military capabilities. Israel contends that Rafah, located in the Gaza Strip, stands as Hamas’ last major stronghold, following successful operations elsewhere that reportedly dismantled 18 out of the militant group’s 24 battalions, according to military sources. Despite earlier operations targeting northern Gaza, Hamas has managed to regroup in some areas and persist in launching attacks. This resilience underscores the strategic significance of Rafah. Israeli authorities assert that Hamas maintains four battalions within Rafah and argue that ground forces must be deployed to neutralize these threats. Additionally, concerns linger over the possibility of senior militants seeking refuge within the confines of the city, adding further urgency to the need for action.
