Obnoxious Bigots Playing the Victim

I don't know about you, but I grew up in a culture that didn't think twice about skin color or race. As a military brat, and later the spouse to a military member, we lived in multiple countries and interacted with people from many different skin colors and cultures. If anything, we were taught to take an interest and learn about different cultures, and most of all, to respect others.

Now I know, there is racism in the world, including the U.S. As a child during the 1960s, we lived in the South, and that is where I did first see racism. Having returned from living in two foreign countries, each with very different cultures, I was really confused by the words and attitudes I saw from some white people to black people. My parents explained to me and my siblings, that people are often afraid of differences and some will lash out in ignorance.

As the bigotry of the Democrat-controlled South was exposed to the nation via television sets entering homes, along with the violence of the KKK, and the corruption of the state and local police and courts against people of color, I started to see a shift. Other parts of the country began to look at Democrats in a negative way. Suddenly, the Democrat party had to hide their bigotry and pretend to support laws against segregation, pretend to support laws against state election laws that prevented people of color from voting. Many Democrats chose to leave the South and make a fresh start elsewhere, to places where their vile history was not generally known... especially if they had political interests.

As the decades passed, I saw a gradual change and great reduction of racial bigotry. As a military brat and spouse, I lived in many different parts of the country, and for the most part, I saw people treat others as people, regardless of skin color.

Sadly, over the last 15 years or so, that has gone awry, especially over the last 10 years. People of color are endlessly being told they are victims and whites are their oppressors.

Most people of color ignore this nonsense, but in every group of people, there are always some that will buy into it. Just like there are still some white bigots, there are some people of color who are bigots and show it by playing the victim. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton became rich by telling companies they are the oppressors and must "donate" to Jackson's and Sharpton's organizations or Jackson and Sharpton would tell the world their company was racist. It didn't matter how many people of color worked for any particular company, this extortion was a big money maker. Nobody likes to be called racist or to have their company destroyed by false accusations.

The ironic part is, that many who play the racial victim card grew up in well-to-do families, have had elite college educations and very prominent careers, earning a very nice income. In their prestigious positions, they are able to spout the endless stories of being a victim, and our children see it and are influenced by it. Some take it in and then use the racism claim to badger over the heads of whites, and use the victim-claim to get special favors, no matter who else is inconvenienced by their demands.

Generally, people don't like public displays of confrontation, and will try to accommodate those playing victim, but sometimes it is just not possible. That doesn't stop those playing victim. They will become more aggressive, spewing their own bigotry while continuing to play the victim.

As Martin Luther King, Jr. so eloquently put it, and I am paraphrasing, people should never be judged on their skin color, but on the quality of their character. He was such a wise man, and this country could really use a lot more of his wisdom.
