Once A Grand Institution, Today Loew’s Poli Theater Is But A Shadow

There are so many abandoned buildings in this world, relics of a different past who resist the passing of time, only to witness their story. Rotting, disintegrating, or completely invaded by nature, abandoned buildings can be as eerie as they are captivating. Every such building has a lot to tell about how it got in such a condition, regardless of whether it is just an urban legend or the honest truth.

This beautiful old-school theater has been abandoned for forty years. If you love movies, you would love its classic theater holding 3,600 seats. It is a real shame no latest Hollywood smashing hits can be premiered here anymore. The reason for this is that the theater has been abandoned since 1975.

The Loew’s Poli Theatre opened in 1922 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It has multiple balconies, a grand foyer and a snack bar. It looks like a place where you might have watched a stage play. But it screened movies, and it is still one of the biggest theatres in Connecticut to this day.

Declining ticket sales forced the owners to sell the theater in 1964. It screened adult films for several years after that. It finally closed its doors permanently in 1975. The city of Bridgeport then took possession of the theater. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It has been diligently waiting for its classic splendor to be on public display again. For now, we offer a dusty look at its past.

However, at last, there are plans to revive the theater. Developers have plans in place to renovate the building. So, even though you won’t be able to see the next blockbuster there, hopefully, one day they will be screening Star Wars: Episode XV.
