There are probably few books of the Bible that have led to as many suggested "scenarios for understanding" as the Book of Revelation. However, many of these are pushed on people and then keep them confused for a long time. Wouldn't it be better to contemplate the contents of the book BEFORE you embrace an imagined mental picture of "what it is all about"? Do the letters to the "7 Churches" (chs. 2-3) really summarize 7 periods of "church history"? Do chapters 4-19 really describe a future 7-year "Tribulation" period just before Jesus returns? Does chapter 20 really describe a future Jewish kingdom age, with Jesus sitting on an earthly throne in Jerusalem? Having once believed those ideas, I must confess that I did so because of what alleged "prophecy experts" asserted, NOT because I ever saw anything in the text that pointed me in that direction! Could it be that the story underlying the symbolism in the book of Revelation is reflecting the larger Biblical story itself? Read the book of Revelation as a part of God's larger revelation and let the rest of Scripture help you make sense of this book.
