I, Romulus Augustulus, was born in the year AD 461, the son of Orestes, a Roman general who served as the de facto ruler of the Western Roman Empire. In AD 475, following the deposition of the previous emperor, my father orchestrated a coup d'état and installed me as the new emperor, despite my young age.

My reign was brief and tumultuous, lasting only until AD 476. During my time as emperor, the Western Roman Empire was beset by internal strife and external threats from barbarian tribes, particularly the Germanic foederati who had been enlisted as mercenaries by the Roman army.

In AD 476, a Germanic chieftain named Odoacer, who commanded the allegiance of the foederati, marched on Rome and besieged the city. Faced with overwhelming odds and lacking sufficient support, I was forced to abdicate the throne. Odoacer proclaimed himself king of Italy and effectively brought an end to the Western Roman Empire.

Following my abdication, I retired to a villa in Campania, where I lived out the remainder of my days in obscurity. Though my reign was brief and largely inconsequential, I am remembered as the last Roman emperor of the West, marking the symbolic end of an era that had lasted for over five centuries.

Despite the ignominious circumstances of my reign and abdication, my story serves as a poignant reminder of the decline and fall of one of history's greatest civilizations. The fall of the Western Roman Empire ushered in a new era in European history, characterized by the rise of new political entities and the emergence of medieval kingdoms.
