Oscar Pettiford, born in Oklahoma in 1922, emerged as one of the most influential bass players of his era. His musical journey from playing with Duke Ellington to becoming a key figure in the development of bebop alongside Charles Mingus paints a vivid picture of his significance in the jazz world. Pettiford's unique style, marked by his introduction of the cello to jazz, set him apart. The Hamburg concert captures him at the peak of his prowess, delivering a performance that resonates with the energy and innovation of the era.
In September 1958, Pettiford embarked on a European tour with "Jazz From Carnegie Hall," featuring luminaries like J. J. Johnson, Zoot Sims, and Lee Konitz. The success of the tour led Pettiford to stay in Europe, where he recorded this exceptional live performance in Hamburg. The ensemble, a mix of seasoned professionals and emerging talents, creates a dynamic and soulful atmosphere.
The concert, recorded at Studio 10, offers a glimpse into Pettiford's musical vision. Tracks like "Moanin'" and "H.E.C. Blues" showcase the seamless collaboration between the musicians, with Pettiford's bass providing the heartbeat of the performance. The composition "Rue Dauphine" and Pettiford's own "Blues In My Mind" demonstrate his prowess not just as a bassist but as a composer with a deep understanding of the blues.
The accompanying photographs by Susanne Schapowalow, capturing moments backstage and in private settings, add a personal touch to this historical recording. The new liner notes by Arne Reimer, featuring memories from Dusko Goykovich and Michel Hausser, offer insights into the magic of that night in Hamburg.
"Blues In My Mind" is not just an album; it's a time capsule, transporting you to an era where jazz was a vibrant force of innovation and expression. So, sit back, press play, and let the blues-infused melodies of Oscar Pettiford & Friends take you on a sonic journey through the heart of 1950s jazz in Hamburg.
