The Gulf of Mannar is protected as a biosphere reserve due to the presence of rare species of marine life in the world and rare species of marine plants.

Every year from December to March, the turtles living in this sea area come to the beach and choose a safe place to dig a hole and lay their eggs in it to protect them. As the eggs were taken and destroyed by the anti-socials, the turtles started to reproduce less. To prevent this, the forest department intensified security and surveillance in the area.

Also, every year they find places where turtle eggs are laid, collect them, keep them in the hatchery set up in the Mukundarayar Inn and after hatching, release them into the sea.

In this way, this year's turtle spawning season started last January. The turtle eggs were collected by the forest department at Dhanushkodi beach in Rameswaram island and kept safely in the sea turtle hatchery owned by the forest department at Mukundarayar Chatram beach.

The eggs thus preserved in the pits hatched after 52 days and 100 chicks emerged. The forest officials released the baby turtles into the sea at Dhanushkodi beach.
