Mustard oil has been used in Indian cooking, and indeed in cooking throughout Asia, for millennia. Many studies have shown that it helps to prevent heart attacks; stabilizes heart arrhythmias; helps to manage blood sugar in diabetics; protects red blood cells and even cellular structures; it is helpful as an inhalant in steam, with respiratory infections; it eases arthritis when applied topically. It has anti-cancer properties! With all of these benefits, it is remarkable that the FDA decided to crack down on this long standing kitchen ingredient, and BAN it in the US It has also been banned in the UK and Canada. The EU, Australia and New Zealand are placing limits on its consumption. The reason? Excess amounts in rats have shown a harmful effect on the heart via erucic acid. Yet "Erucic Acid: Both Sides of the Story", published in the journal Molecules in 2023, concludes that the studies on which this warning is based are flawed; four decades old, very few rats, and extremely high doses. Yet a campaign to smear mustard oil is ramping up in the West - right when pharma companies, per Ed Dowd, are in a "feeding frenzy" to acquire cancer treatment companies. Is this yet another example of the organized maligning -- for profit -- of a traditional natural substance that might have powerful health benefits?
