Stunning Cementerio de la Recoleta, Buenos Aires (Argentina). A rare glimpse inside the tombs of Cementerio de la Recoleta (or, La Recoleta Cemetery) in Buenos Aires (Argentina).
La Recoleta Cemetery (Spanish: Cementerio de la Recoleta) is a cemetery located in the Recoleta neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. La Recoleta Cemetery contains the graves of notable people, including Eva Perón, presidents of Argentina, Nobel Prize winners, the founder of the Argentine Navy, and a granddaughter of Napoleon. In 2011, the BBC hailed La Recoleta Cemetery as one of the world's best cemeteries, and in 2013, CNN listed it among the 10 most beautiful cemeteries in the world.
Considered one of the most unusual cemeteries in the world, La Recoleta Cemetery was declared the city’s first official public burial place in 1822. Aside from being the resting place of the deceased, La Recoleta Cemetery is completely unlike a normal cemetery. The place is full of elaborately carved scroll-work and stately pillars that only reach up to your shoulder because all the structures are weirdly mini; it’s more magical than macabre. The burial site of Argentina’s most famous figures, including Evita herself, the cemetery is a must-do while in Buenos Aires.
