Beijing has said that a possible US ban on TikTok is “unfair” in its first response since the House of Representatives passed a bill to outlaw the popular video-sharing app unless it is sold off from Chinese ownership.

The Chinese foreign ministry said on Thursday that if Washington was using national security reasons to undermine competition from overseas, then there was “no fairness to speak of”.

The bill passed overwhelmingly on Wednesday amid fears of data security and Beijing’s influence over 150 million US users.
