A lot of people ask us "What is a transponder key"? Transponder or chip keys first started appearing on cars in the 1980's, they use radio frequencies to speak with a car's computer to authorize access. In order for the transponder in a new key to be able to start a car, it needs to be programmed with the correct information to tell the computer to start.
