Set in a 1950s California suburb the film centers on a 10-year old boy (Madorsky) who suspects that his parents (Quaid and Hurt) are not what they seem. It was Balaban’s debut as a feature film director. Released by Vestron Pictures on January 27 1989 the film received a mixed response from critics and fared poorly commercially but has since developed a cult following. Randy Quaid’s performance earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Male Lead.
