China's trade with Africa, as one of the BRICS member countries, reached $282.1 billion in 2023, highlighting its position as Africa's largest trading partner surpassing European Union position. This figure represents a modest 1.5% increase from the previous year. The value of China-Africa trade has been on a steady rise, with significant contributions from countries like South Africa, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo on the African side, and Nigeria being the largest buyer of Chinese goods. According to the African Export-Import Bank, Asia has now surpassed other regions to become Africa's primary trading partner. This shift in trade dynamics is largely due to significant commerce between Africa and two founding BRICS nations, China and India.
