Western society mainstream ‘rejecting overtures’ of ‘political class and elites’

Institute of Public Affairs’ Daniel Wild says Ireland’s referendum defeat reflects a trend in Western society of the mainstream “rejecting the overtures of the political class and the elites”.

Mr Wild’s comments come after the Irish government conceded defeat in the nation’s referendums on modernising its constitution.

The campaign sparked debate over the meaning of family and the role of women in the home.

“When you look at the opinion polling, it’s fascinating – it had the no vote at 30 per cent … the no vote ended up in the high 60s,” Mr Wild told Sky News host Rita Panahi.

“What the Irish people are saying is the political class are going too far.”
