Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, has issued an apology for altering a family photograph that was subsequently retracted by several leading news organizations.

On Monday, Catherine expressed her regrets for the misunderstanding related to the edited image, captured by her husband, Prince William. The picture was originally published on Sunday to commemorate the U.K.'s Mother's Day.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. U.K. time on Monday, Catherine addressed the issue on X (previously known as Twitter), stating, "As someone who enjoys photography, I occasionally experiment with photo editing. My intention was to apologize for any confusion caused by the edited family photo we shared. I hope everyone who celebrated had a joyous Mother's Day."

Following her statement on social media, where she signed off with her initial "C" for Catherine, major photo agencies including the Associated Press (AP) and Reuters removed the photograph from their platforms, citing allegations of digital alteration.

Insiders close to the Duchess informed PEOPLE magazine that Catherine applied "minor adjustments" to what was described as an "informal, family photo taken by the Prince of Wales."

The intent behind releasing the photograph, according to the source, was to provide a casual glimpse into the family's life on Mother’s Day. "The family enjoyed their Mother's Day together, marking it as a special occasion," the source noted.
