Young Owl Frightened by a Drone

Beginner drones can be purchased cheaply. Unfortunately, too many people don’t keep up with the rules or proper etiquette for using drones. This is especially true when it comes to wildlife and many rules have been put in place for their protection. Regardless of the rules for drone use, if your drone causes issues with a protected species, that is a whole new issue. Last year, in 2023, a drone pilot was convicted of endangering a “Threatened Species” by flying over a colony of Black Skimmers and flushing them off their nests. And yes, he did get jail time.
In this video, this fledgling Great Horned Owl is frightened by a drone. Not only are droves banned in this area but the Owl is also protected by Federal Laws. Thankfully the drone pilot listened to the photographer and left quickly.
If you own a drone, please follow local rules and respect wildlife, especially during mating season.
