Today we'll be in Brooksville Florida finally visiting the Historic Spring Hill Cemetery. This African American Cemetery was established in the early 1800's and is the final resting place for many of Brooksville's early slave settlers. As settlers began arriving in Pierceville and Melendez communities ( eventually becoming Brooksville Fl ) in the 1840's, some owned black slaves. The earliest grave markers date back to the 1820's, it was at this time I believe that some of the enslaved who already populated the area met a horrible fate. On one grave marker of a man and wife the man is identified by a number. Many visitors to the cemetery have reported seeing the apparition of a man hanging from a tree. To read articles and watch video's of this hidden cemetery, you may get spooked at the way it is portrayed. What I encountered was a uniquely beautiful and very peaceful African American cemetery that even after 200 years has remained true to its roots.
