The war in Ukraine has been going on for 10 years, and over that decade many Russians and Ukrainians have lost their lives. The loss has been immense on both sides. The loss increased when Russia moved in 2 years ago, but there were a lot of people dying in Ukraine long before Russia invaded. The area where people were dying most before Russia invaded was Eastern Ukraine, the Donbas. The people in this region declared their independence in 2014, after the violent overthrow of the government in Kiev. The new government called these people "separatist" and went to war with them to force them to remain part of Ukraine. These separatist in Eastern Ukraine were much like the American Patriots who declared their independence from the British Empire in 1776.
