"Stone Echoes of the Maya" with Luke Caverns

101

Luke is recently returned from his expedition to the Peten jungle of Central America, where he amazingly discovered a long forgotten Mayan city. Luke describes the Peten as "a jungle landscape of ruins, like a pin cushion with no more room for pins to push in". Maya civilization was grander, larger and more populated than any modern city of the modern age.

In this episode Luke discusses the mysterious, innovative, beautiful, and violent Maya civilization. Much of Mayan history has sadly been lost to time due to the destructiveness of Spanish conquerors, disease, jungle overgrowth, and the failures of modern native communities to discover and educate the world.
When Francisco de Orellana first entered the "New World", he returned home with tales of endless cities filled with millions of people, pyramids, and a thriving culture among the jungles of Central and South America. But, when other explorers returned, they found no such evidence and branded Orellana a liar and his statements hyperbolic at best. But now, thanks to explorers like Luke and modern technology, we are realizing the Maya were so much more.

How did the Maya collapse? Why were the Maya fascinated with time and astronomy? What role do psychedelics play in a relationship between ancient Greece and the Maya? What significance did the Library of Alexandria play in the ancient world? Why did the Maya and ancient Egypt create enigmatic megalithic sarcophagi? Did the Maya make contact with ancient Mediterranean cultures like the Egyptians? And why are their so many religious, cultural, and architectural similarities between these cultures?
All this and more on this awesome episode!
