In modern contexts, the concept of the Aswang was used by US General Pershing in the American Filipino War of 1899-1902 as psyops and is one of the earliest documented episodes of this type of operation. Psy-ops involve the use of psychological techniques to influence attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs of a target audience. In this case, the Aswang legend might be exploited to induce fear or manipulate the perceptions of certain groups, whether in warfare, political campaigns, or other forms of social control. This could involve spreading rumors, creating false sightings, or using other tactics to leverage the deep-rooted cultural fear associated with the Aswang for strategic purposes.

As per the Judgement on the 26 April 2022 in the ECJU Case C-401/19, Republic of Poland v European Parliament and Council of the EU: it was noted in that judgement that the interpretation of Article 17(7), second paragraph, requires that member states permit users of online sharing services are authorised to upload and make available content generated by themselves for the specific purposes of quotation, criticism, review, caricature, parody or pastiche.
