Joseph Smith was born in 1805 in Sharon, Vermont, and later founded the religious movement known as Mormonism in the early 19th century. Claiming to have had a series of visions and divine revelations, Smith translated what he said were ancient golden plates to produce the Book of Mormon. He organized the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1830 and led his followers to establish settlements in Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. Smith's leadership faced opposition, and he was arrested multiple times before being killed by a mob in 1844 in Carthage, Illinois, cementing his status as a martyr within the Mormon faith. Despite his death, Joseph Smith's teachings continue to influence millions of followers worldwide.
