Korean War

The Korean War, a conflict between North Korea (the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) and South Korea (the Republic of Korea), resulted in the loss of over 2 million civilian lives. It commenced in June 1950 when North Korea, backed by the Soviet Union, launched an invasion of the South.

The conflict evolved into a proxy war as the United States and its allies intervened on behalf of South Korea, while China supported North Korea.

Rooted in the aftermath of World War II, the division of Korea at the 38th parallel by the United States and the Soviet Union in August 1945 was initially intended as a temporary measure with the goal of Korean unification. However, political tensions quickly escalated, leading to full-scale warfare.

The Korean War marked the first instance of a proxy war between the two superpowers, the Soviet Union and the United States, fought in a third-party nation.

Following extensive casualties on both sides, the hostilities ceased in July 1953, leaving Korea divided into two antagonistic states. Despite negotiations in 1954, no further agreements were reached, and the front line established during the war has since been acknowledged as the de facto boundary between North and South Korea.
