RFK Jr.: Remembering Councilman Mays

I'm so sorry to report that Eric Mays, charismatic and beloved City Councilman of Flint, Michigan, has died suddenly at age 65. Eric was my friend and ally. He championed the cause of cleaning the lead contamination out of Flint's water supply. In 2014, Eric stood up for the beleaguered activists and devised and implemented the ingenious legislative maneuver of declaring a public health emergency to force Michigan’s captive regulatory agencies to finally test the water for toxins. Those tests validated the accusations of Flint residents who said that they and their families had suffered catastrophic injuries, including permanent brain damage, from drinking municipal water containing lethal levels of lead contamination.

Thanks to Eric and a small group of activists, the public finally learned that city, state, and federal government officials knowingly caused the tragedy when they decided to change the city’s water source to save money at the expense of the health and well-being of Flint’s citizens. Eighteen of those officials have since been criminally indicted. Eric served three terms on City Council for Flint’s First Ward. His death leaves a giant hole in the hearts of those of us who loved him.
