America's Counterfeit Goddess of Liberty (Libertas/Demokratia)

Today, we live in a time where men suppress the truth about God. This suppression of truth has yielded all manner of destructive norms. Those who suppress the truth about God are serving the creature instead of the creator.

Humans were made to serve, to worship, and to mimic. Since the fall of Eden, man has served all manner of false gods in an effort to satiate his need to worship. In times past, these gods took the form of metal statues and wooden idols. While these physical instruments of worship were sometimes viewed as the source of blessing, it was more frequently thought that the spirits possessed these idols, meaning that the idol represented something larger.

In ancient times, the concept of democracy was worshiped in the goddess, Democratia. Liberty was worshiped in the Goddess, Libertas. Utopian ideals of equality, fraternity, and society, contradicted the urgency of man's sin nature, as revealed in the New Testament.

Today, the ideals of liberty and democracy are still cherished and treasured, but without the wooden idols. The spirits behind the idols still receive worship through our veneration of the ideals, even though no physical God is bowed to or worshiped.

When given the choice, the American revolutionaries passed over the examples set forth by Christ and His Church in preference of the pagan ideals of Republicanism, democracy, freedom, and liberty.

Like their pagan Greek and Roman predecessors, the American revolutionaries revived and restored the worship of people rule, or democracy.

What makes America unique from the many nations that have preceded her in the past is that she offers her citizens no specific established religion. There is no established religion in America. All religions are welcome. Those who do not practice any form of religion are free in their non-practice. Former widely acknowledged evils, like adultery, infanticide, and even overt acts of blasphemy are today shrugged at and legalized.
The modern American man loves his liberty. His Lockean sense of pre-emptive killing when property is jeopardized leads him to an emboldened willingness to fight to the death in order to protect this newfound liberty and way of life. This, of course, is an obvious deviation from New Testament thinking. Those who claim to follow Christ are known by their fruits in that they strive to live by the commands of Christ. Christ commands all men, except for the governments that He himself ordains, to lay down their swords. Christ encouraged his followers to love their enemies and to consider persecution, even violent persecution, to be a badge of honor with eternal benefits. Christ’s upside down view of the world is rooted in His commandments to love God with all of our mind, heart, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves.
