COLUMBIA, South Carolina — Former President Donald Trump spoke at the Black Conservative Federation honors gala Friday evening as he ramps up his effort to court black voters away from the Democratic Party.

President Donald J. Trump highlighted Biden’s past ties with segregationists like Mississippi Sen. James Eastland and Georgia Sen. Herman Talmadge, a connection Biden admitted to during the 2020 presidential election. Biden was also close friends with Senator Robert Carlyle Byrd.

Byrd started his political life as an Exalted Cyclops in the Ku Klux Klan. In 1944, Byrd wrote the following in a letter to Senator Theodore Bilbo: "I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side ... Rather I should die a thousand times and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

Byrd filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act for 14 hours.

Several polls show President Joe Biden rapidly losing support among black voters due to Biden's policies.
