Bass Reeves Tells His Story, From Slavery to Lawman

Howdy, young folks! Sit down and let me spin you a yarn about the wild, wild West and the life of Bass Reeves – that's me!

Born a slave in Arkansas around 1838, my life took a turn when the Civil War rolled around. I high-tailed it out of there, found some Cherokee folks, and joined up with them. Life on the run wasn't easy, but it made me tough.

Eventually, I landed a gig as a U.S. Deputy Marshal. Now, being a Black lawman in those days turned heads, but I had a no-nonsense approach to justice. I rode through the Indian Territory, bringing in outlaws left and right. Yep, I was the law bringer with a sharp mind and a quicker draw.

You might've heard of me bringing in folks like the infamous Belle Starr and the notorious Cherokee Bill. The Indian Territory was my stomping ground, and I made sure it was a safer place for decent folks.

I wasn't just about shootouts and showdowns. I could track a criminal like a bloodhound and outsmart them before they knew what hit 'em. My dedication earned me the title of one of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi River.

Now, life on the frontier wasn't all peaches and cream. I faced danger, prejudice, and all sorts of challenges. But every outlaw I brought to justice was a step toward a better, safer land.

In 1907, when Oklahoma became a state, I hung up my spurs. I'd arrested more than 3,000 felons and never got a scratch. Can you believe that?

So, youngsters, remember the name Bass Reeves. The Old West was a tough place, but I did my part to make it a bit more just.
