Northwest Local Schools work with first responders on safety plans
School resource officers have been walking the halls for nine years. Their presence is just one component of a large-scale safety plan. Northwest Local Schools and Colerain police said they work closely together on school safety measures like lockdown drills and active shooter simulations. Assistant Superintendent Darrell Yater said school officials regularly meet with fire, police, EMS and others about their plans. "They're there to monitor, watch the response of the administrator and staff and give feedback on how we can improve our processes," Yater said. There are two resource officers assigned to the 1,800-student Colerain High School. After every school shooting, there's a debrief. Schools and police also encourage students to report possible threats seen on social media or elsewhere. It can be done anonymously. That's what led to a Ross High School student facing a charge of inducing panic after the school shooting in Florida Wednesday. "Everyone is always looking for and trying to improve their school safety," Yater said.
