Paul Murphy - 'Winter In My Heart' + cover of 'Maggie's Farm'
This was one of those sessions beset by technical gremlins. Maybe emotional ones too, I don't know. I wanted to try out a completely new arrangement of 'Winter'. I'm semi-wary of reworking this one, as I know it's a song that has a lot of fans - I guess we've all walked the path detailed - but I always felt there were more ways to nuance the lyric, and this is one way that I wanted to try out. The session did ... not go well! One day, someone will upload the outtakes - snapped strings, leg braces giving out, helicoptors overhead, nuns on pogo-sticks [well, maybe that one was just a dream I had last night].
Anyway, this was one of the outtakes that doesn't end in words with hard consonants, so I thought I might put this up, as the song was close to what I was aiming for. I burnt some steam off on a bash-out of' Bob Dylan's classic 'Maggie's Farm'. Thanks Bob. Because 'Winter' is a song I never cut in the studio, even on 4-track - and it's too late now - there is no 'substitute' version for any live ones. But hopefully the soul of the song shines out past any technical faux's and foes. I figure that, by the time they are 14, 15, my children will be tech-savvy enough to AI all the outtakes together and get a perfect version. (I have a suspicion they will instead AI together all the bad words from the break-down takes, and make one 30-minute-long song called 'Our Daddy Has Tourette's'...)
Light and peace,
Me

'Winter In My Heart'
There were words I should have said
Moves I should have made
But I'd been burned so many times
I felt a little afraid
If I told you how I felt that night
Would you have stayed?
I had winter in my heart
Springtime in my soul
I'd been left in pieces
And you remade me whole
The smiles came so easy
The laughter stayed much longer
When indecision held me back
I should have been much stronger
I gave up ground I should have stood
She stayed with one who wronged her
I had winter in my heart
Autumn on my mind
You pulled me from the precipice
And then left me behind
I still walk where statues stand
And knock on unlocked doors
We sailed a ship to paradise
Yet stand on seperate shores
You still glide barefoot thru' my dreams
Do I appear in yours?
I had winter in my heart
And summer in my grasp
We gaze at empty days now
And mourn for what did not last
