In Camp Washington, community organizers plan 'a way forward'
Camp Washington's "Campy Washington" mural says a lot about how the neighborhood. It's industrial, and unusual. Now, the neighborhood is looking to embrace that identity and create a brand: "Made in Camp." Local community leaders detailed their plans in a 74-page report. "In the next four, five, 10 years, Camp could be kind of an oasis for a lot of artists, small businesses and homeowners," Joseph Gorman said. Gorman is the president and CEO of the Camp Washington Community Board. "We have a lot of companies that makes things here. And the artists, they also make things," Gorman said. "And so we thought, maybe we'll have a Made in Camp brand." There are 150 companies that call Camp Washington home, like Kao Brands and Weber Tools. Cincinnati Wholesale Florist moved in about a year ago. "It's convenient to our customers," florist owner Les Hils said. "It's a great location." Plans to increase economic development include a unique coffee house at Colerain and Bates. Rhinegeist Brewery has plans for the former Kahn's site off Spring Grove. Community organizers are hoping a stretch of Colerain will become a community entertainment district.
