Detective Lindsey Wade had been working on Jennifer Bastian's murder case for years. She had grown to love her mom and even received strength from her to keep moving forward, somehow.

'If Pattie Bastian, who's 12 yr old daughter can put a smile on her face and keep going, then I can too' was Detective Wade's mindset. But the cold case was 30 years old!

Evidence was almost non-existent, good leads and suspects few and far between, and every day the case dragged on seemed more and more hopeless.

But in 2015 there was a breakthrough. Detective Wade learned about a new genealogical technique in Arizona that might help get a family name from a Y-STR profile. So she sent it to them and the Arizona lab returned 3 names. One of those names was in the case file but not anyone Det Wade was remotely focused on.

But now Detective Wade had a plan. Every year their cold case unit needed to conduct an exercise. This year (2016), they were going to reopen this case, put out a renewed call to the public, and go collect DNA buccal swabs from as many suspects as they could. With all the help they mustered they collected hundreds of swabs.

After almost 18 months and negative, after negative results came back from the crime lab, Detective Wade had almost given up. Then she got the call. We have a match.
