Ron Paul Defends Wikileaks

On December 9, 2010, Ron Paul defended Wikileaks, arguing that the treatment of Julian Assange was tantamount to "killing the messenger for bringing bad news." Ron Paul stood out as one of Assange's few defenders in DC.

Rep. Paul also noted that Julian Assange is not an American citizen, so he can't be charged with treason, and also that he's a publisher, not a spy.

“Should we not at least ask how the U.S. Government can charge an Australian citizen with treason for publishing U.S. secret information that he did not steal,” Paul asked. “And if WikiLeaks is to be prosecuted for publishing classified documents, why shouldn't the Washington Post, the New York Times, and others that have also published these documents be prosecuted?”
