US Vetoes UN Ceasefire Resolution in Israel-Hamas Conflict, Proposes Alternative Plan
The United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution seeking an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, favouring a temporary ceasefire linked to the release of Hamas-held hostages. Thirteen council members backed the resolution, while Britain abstained. This marks the third US veto since the conflict began, with Washington also blocking a December amendment. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield signalled the veto, citing concerns over potential disruptions to ongoing hostage negotiations. In response, the US proposed a rival resolution supporting a temporary Gaza ceasefire, emphasizing hostage release and humanitarian aid. This shift aligns with President Biden's recent discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.
