Experts voice concerns over Trump's possible re-election

Europe is facing “existential” danger and even “disaster” in the possibility the US will elect a Trump administration that exits Nato and leaves the West vulnerable to attack from Putin’s Russia, a group of leading experts warned, according to İnews.
As the two-year anniversary of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine nears, leading Russia analysts at London’s Chatham House think-tank warn: 1. European defences are “perilously thin”, with the UK and other nations running out of key weaponry. 2. Russia wants to test the viability of Nato’s Article 5 mutual defence agreement, in which an attack on one member state is seen as an attack on all, and will be likely to do so if America’s commitment to the alliance is in doubt. 3. Assaults on Baltic states are feared; with concerns that Russia would use the threat of battlefield nuclear weapons to keep hold of land grabs on Nato territory.
The continent will need a new EU defence commissioner and a beefed-up security deal between Brussels and the UK to counter the threat from a revanchist Russia, in case the US leaves the continent to defend itself, according to Natalie Sabanadze, senior research fellow at the think-tank’s Russia and Eurasia programme, according to İnews.
“This is something that they are thinking about,” she said. “Europe definitely needs more investment in security and defence, and co-ordination because it is a very fragmented scene. And I think it will be vital to have a special agreement with the UK and they’re already talking about it.”
The need for a huge boost in Europe-wide defence spending and co-operation “is not vital, it’s existential”, said Sabanadze’s colleague Keir Giles during the briefing. “If we want to protect Europe against what Putin wants to do, there’s absolutely no question this has to happen.”
The Chatham House group repeated the warning of other analysts that America’s withdrawal from Nato – or even its doubts over its commitment to the defence alliance – would put Europe in immediate peril.
