Crime, Drugs, and The Economy in Hunting - Marshall's Forensic Crime Lab
We Are, Marshall!!
If you've ever seen that movie you know it's impossible to not tear up during numerous parts of it. It's based on a true story of when the 1970 Marshall Football Team, its coaches, and many of the prominent members of the community died in a horrific plane crash.
The actors are superb, the storyline is amazing, and the way the community of Huntington, West Virginia came together to support one another and "rise from the ashes" as replacement head coach Jack Lengyel put it, is nothing short of heart-wrenching.
The best part about the movie? The residents of Huntington are happy with it, so most of it is accurate. That's a rare combination and worth checking out.
So what has happened to Huntington and Marshall since then? That depends on some significant factors along the timeline. For the most part, it has maintained its close community and small-town feel, keeping what's most important like playing Christmas carols on the Marshall University bell tower, but at times, like 2021, political decisions made in Washington DC have devastated the economy and really made life difficult for many of the Huntington residents.
Anyone tied to the pharmaceutical industry and illegal drug trafficking seems to be doing well though as Huntington is rife with opioid and heroin abuse, as many communities in today's society are. Sadly all those in the energy sector are being devastated so it seems like anyone wanting to make an honest living is struggling.
But folks in small towns have a way of coming together, rallying around, and supporting each other until the tide shifts again. And hopefully for all of us that will happen soon.
