Shortly before 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 8th, Blunt County, Tennessee Sheriff’s Deputies Greg McCowan and Shelby Eggers were patrolling Sevierville Road in Maryville when they pulled over a vehicle being driven erratically by 42-year-old Kenneth Wayne DeHart of Alcoa. The driver reportedly ignored the deputies’ orders to exit the vehicle and was subsequently tazed. Police reports say DeHart allegedly pulled a weapon, fatally shooting Deputy McCowan and injuring Deputy Eggers, and then fled the scene as Deputy Eggers returned fire.

A team of 150 law enforcement officers is combing the area to track down the murder suspect, and the suspect’s brother and girlfriend have been arrested and charged with helping DeHart avoid arrest.

While a spokesman for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation assured citizens it’s just a matter of time until DeHart is apprehended, this senseless crime highlights the need to pray for and protect the brave men and women of law enforcement and first responders who risk their lives daily on our behalf.
