1 Chron. 14:17 (MSG) David was soon famous all over the place, far and near; and God put the fear of God into the godless nations.

But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust me enough to demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into the land I am giving them!”

• Saul’s Impatience
1 Sam. 13:13-14a “How foolish!” Samuel exclaimed. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. Had you kept it, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart.

• David’s Humility/ Patience.

1 Sam. 17:15 (NLT) but David went back and forth so he could help his father with the sheep in Bethlehem.

1 Sam. 17:17; 20a (NLT) One day Jesse said to David, “Take this basket of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread, and carry them quickly to your brothers… So David left the sheep with another shepherd and set out early the next morning with the gifts,

2. Initiative that must be Expressed!
1 Sam. 17:22-23 (NLT) David left his things with the keeper of supplies and hurried out to the ranks to greet his brothers. As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, came out from the Philistine ranks. Then David heard him shout his usual taunt to the army of Israel.

3. Vision That needs to be Corrected!
1 Sam. 16:7 (NLT) But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Sam. 17:24 (NLT) As soon as the Israelite army saw him, they began to run away in fright.

1 Sam. 17:32 (NLT) “Don’t worry about this Philistine,” David told Saul. “I’ll go fight him!”

4. Questions that Must be Asked!
1 Sam. 17:26 (NLT) David asked the soldiers standing nearby, “What will a man get for killing this Philistine and ending his defiance of Israel? Who is this pagan Philistine anyway, that he is allowed to defy the armies of the living God?”

(1) What does my Leader desire?
(2) What does God desire?

5. Skills that must be Mastered!
1 Sam. 17:36-37a (NLT) I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!”

1 Sam. 17:39b-40 (NLT) …“I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again. He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.
