World reacts with awe as OpenAI launches photorealistic Sora text-to-video tool

An astronaut looks across a desolate salt flat, a bright red, knitted helmet matching perfectly the fire and determination in his eyes. A crisp, snowy Tokyo street, majestically captured as a drone swoops behind a young couple strolling through a quaint market on the banks of the Sumida. A woman walks gracefully yet purposefully underneath a dominating, neon skyline during a rare break in the rain. Powerful, evocative film clips to rival anything from Hollywood, yet these were made not by humans, but by AI: OpenAI’s new Sora text-to-video model.

The new tool is not available to the public yet, over fears that it may be used to promote, you guessed it, ‘hateful content’ and ‘misinformation,’ but with Sora capable of producing videos so realistic that they’re indistinguishable from reality, people are already worried about the profound consequences. Those in the film industry in particular reacted with fear and horror that it would wipe out an entire industry, while others have worried that the upcoming 2024 US presidential election is going to be wild if fake video can be produced with a mere text prompt. Also, off-again on-again Sam Altman shared some cool videos, including one of a dolphin racing a fish on a bicycle. Which we’re pretty sure isn’t real.
