Kanazawa literally means “marsh of gold” ⚜️

“Little Kyoto” or how Kanazawas is also called, is famous for its gold leaf (99% of the Japans gold leafs is produced here), is not only the top gold leaf producer of the country since the Edo period, but also Japan’s biggest consumer of ice cream.

I got mine in Hakuichi's (close to Kenroku-en Garden), but you can also get them in many parts of Kanazawa, like parts of Higashi Chaya or in Omicho Market.

⚜️ Gold leaf is made by infusing gold with minuscule amounts of copper and silver and beating it into a sheet measuring just a 10000th of a millimeter. It’s super thin and tasteless! Gold leaf on ice cream is purely decorative.

BUT …

In Japanese culture, ingesting gold is believed to keep you younger for a longer period of time and to prolong your life.

If you want to live longer, make sure to try this famous treat when in Kanazawa.

You never know …
😉
