Special counsel Jack Smith urges Supreme Court to reject Trump bid to delay election trial

On Wednesday, special counsel Jack Smith urged the Supreme Court to dismiss an emergency application filed by Donald Trump, seeking additional delay in the former president’s criminal trial related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

Smith filed his response six days before the court’s deadline. Trump is seeking extra time to argue that the federal indictment should be dismissed based on presidential immunity.

In his filing, Smith argued that Trump’s attempt to halt an appeals court ruling, which rejected his immunity claim, does not meet the necessary requirements for Supreme Court intervention.

Smith expressed that if the court is inclined to approve Trump’s request, it should expedite the case and issue a ruling “as promptly as possible,” facilitating the progression of the trial.

He proposed that the court consider oral arguments as early as next month, allowing for a ruling before the typical conclusion of the court’s term at the end of June, NBC News reported.
