Simon Nellist had a deep love for Australia and its beautiful oceans, which he discovered during his travels to the country six or seven years ago. He and his fiancee lived together in Wally Creek, South Sydney, and had planned to get married in just a few weeks' time. Unfortunately, their wedding was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and they never had the chance to exchange vows.

An avid swimmer, Simon often went for a dip in the warm waters between Little Bay and Malabar, East Sydney. He was originally from Penzance in Cornwall, UK, and had served two tours in Afghanistan with the British Royal Air Force. He was in good shape and had been training for the Malabar Magic Ocean Swim on the day of his tragic Simon Nellist shark attack.
