The uvula is a mass of tissue located at the end of our soft palate in the mouth. It assists us in swallowing foods and liquids and prevents them from leaking out through the nose. In some people, either from birth, the uvula is very small or split into two parts. This condition is referred to as bifid uvula, and currently, 2% of the world's population is affected by it.

Causes of Bifid Uvula
Bifid uvula is primarily caused by a condition called submucosal cleft palate. Submucosal cleft palate is a condition where genetic mutations during fetal development cause the muscles in the roof of the mouth, or the mouth plate, not to develop properly. As a result, the uvula's development at the end of the soft palate in the mouth also doesn't progress correctly, leading to a small size or division into two parts. This is what is known as a bifid uvula.

Besides submucosal cleft palate, environmental factors, or habits of the mother like smoking, alcohol abuse, and certain medications during fetal development, can also contribute to bifid uvula.

Symptoms
Most of the time, people with bifid uvula don't experience any symptoms. However, in some cases, difficulty swallowing food and liquids, leaking of food and liquids through the nose, and snoring can be symptoms caused by bifid uvula.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Because bifid uvula often doesn't produce noticeable symptoms, diagnosing it can be very challenging. This is why, in many people, the presence of bifid uvula is only discovered when diagnosing another condition.

If the bifid uvula causes difficulty in speaking and eating and drinking, speech and feeding therapy may be recommended to the patient. However, in some cases, uvulectomy surgery to remove the bifid uvula might be carried out.
