The recoil was reduced, and the accuracy was better. The new cartridge also had better penetration of obstacles and longer range due to its higher velocity. It would seem that everything was improved, compared to the old AKM... but not for Spetsnaz! During the war in Afghanistan, KGB and GRU operators would replace their new AK-74s with older AK47s and AKMs.
