Divers get an amazing surprise when school of hammerhead sharks approach
On a recent scuba diving adventure to the Socorro Islands in Mexico, Stuart our videographer had the amazing chance to dive with a number of huge sea animals.
After a long boat ride of approximately 24 hours aboard a live-aboard diving vessel the group arrived to the Socorro Islands. Lying some 370 miles off the country's western coast ,Socorro is 10.25 by 7.15 miles with an area of 51 square miles. It is the largest of the four islands of the Revillagigedo Archipelago.
There are numerous dive locations within these islands and the footage here was taken at a site called Roca Partida near 120 feet deep .
Roca Partida “ Split Rock” ranks as the smallest of the four Revillagigedo Islands, part of the Free and Sovereign State of Colima in Mexico. This uninhabited island encompasses an extremely small area, and many divers rank it among the most beautiful in Mexico. Divers must obtain permits from the Mexican Armed Forces to enter into this military zone. at a very small 300 feet long and 26 feet wide with the twin peaks being approximately 25 feet high above the sea. While searching this area for the sharks ,giant mantas and whale sharks that visit this location, Stuart and his dive buddy were lucky enough to take in the amazing site of a school of hammerhead sharks passing by.
Hammerhead sharks range from 3.0 to 19 ft in length and weigh from 7 to 1,278.7 pounds. They are usually light gray and have a greenish tint. Their bellies are white which allows them to blend into the ocean when viewed from the bottom and sneak up on their prey. Their heads have lateral projections which give them a hammer-like shape.
Hammerheads have disproportionately small mouths and seem to do a lot of bottom-hunting. They are also known to form schools during the day, sometimes in groups of over 100. In the evening, like other sharks, they become solitary hunters.
What an amazing adventure for all these scuba divers, creating many life long memories.
