After an unusual start to this trial, we finally get to hear opening statements today. On day one, the jury went to view three scenes where the state contends Harmony was beaten, died, and where her body was hidden until Adam removed it. Adam Montgomery also conceded two charges during day one, which were falsifying evidence and abuse of a corpse. He waived his right to be present in the courtroom and did not show up for court.

Adam Montgomery stands accused of causing his 5-year-old daughter, Harmony's death in 2019. Although her body has never been found, police in New Hampshire charged him with the crime in the fall of 2022. He is charged with second-degree murder, second-degree assault, abuse of a corpse, falsifying evidence, and witness tampering.

Prosecutors say Adam Montgomery punched Harmony to death in 2019 while in a car with his estranged wife Kayla and their two boys. Kayla told investigators that Adam hit Harmony in the head with a closed fist because she had a "bathroom accident" in the car the family was living in at the time. Kayla stated this had happened three separate times on Dec. 9, 2019. She said that after the final blow, Adam said words to the effect that he felt something or heard something when he hit Harmony, and, "I think I really hurt her this time. I think I did something."

The couple is accused of hiding Harmony's body by moving her around and placing her in a duffle bag, a cooler, and attic space. Investigators suspect Adam dismembered Harmony and disposed of her.
