Sacramento County, California — On Sunday, November 5, 2023, at approximately 12:20 p.m., a solo motorcycle officer from the California Highway Patrol was involved in a vehicle pursuit with a silver-colored Toyota Prius near Interstate 80 and Norwood Avenue. Moments later, a Sheriff’s K9 deputy joined in the pursuit to assist, along with another CHP officer. The driver, later identified as 36-year-old Zachary Wolffscott, suddenly struck an adult male riding a motorcycle with his vehicle just east of Greenback Lane on Interstate 80, also rendering his vehicle seemingly inoperable.

Wolffscott then exited his vehicle and pulled out a knife. He continued to advance toward the officers, ignoring repeated commands to stop. In-car camera video then shows the K9 deputy firing his gun at the suspect twice. Wolffscott is seen falling onto the roadway, and the deputy is heard telling him to drop the knife. Wolffscott is seen getting back up with the knife in hand as he appears to lunge at and attempt to stab the motorcyclist lying on the ground. The K9 deputy fired four more shots, a CHP motorcycle officer fired three rounds, and a CHP patrol officer fired one round. Wolffscott was taken to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead. The motorcyclist was also taken to the hospital and survived his injuries.
