The Marion County Sheriff's Office released dashcam, body camera footage of a high speed chase that occured on February 4, 2024.

Around 10:30 p.m. Marion County Sheriff's Office Corporal Jordan Tripp witnessed a silver BMW two thousand two running a red light at the intersection of South West 38th Street and South West 80th Avenue in the city of Ocala. The driver later identified as 19-year-old Michael Gonzalez drove around Corporal Tripp while speeding at approximately a hundred Miles per hour through the intersection. Corporal Tripp, stationed at the red light, promptly activated his emergency lights and siren, initiating a pursuit in an attempt to catch up to Gonzalez's vehicle. Gonzalez continued to evade capture, reaching speeds exceeding a hundred Miles per hour for several miles. However, upon reaching the 7900 block of South West 80th Avenue, Gonzalez lost control of the vehicle, causing it to spin out onto the grass on the west side of the roadway.

Corporal Tripp approached the vehicle, but Gonzalez persisted in attempting to flee. Given the high speeds, erratic driving, and the residential setting, the pursuit was terminated in the interest of public safety. Approximately 30 minutes later, other deputies in the vicinity located Gonzalez's vehicle. Corporal Milton Manchester executed a traffic stop, with Gonzalez pulling into a gas station. A felony stop was conducted, resulting in Gonzalez's arrest.

What is a felony stop?
A "felony" or "high-risk" traffic stop occurs when police stop a vehicle which they have strong reason to believe contains a driver or passenger suspected of having committed a serious crime, especially of a nature that would lead the police to believe the suspects may be armed (such as an armed robbery, assault with a weapon, or an outstanding felony warrant for the registered owner).

When questioned by Corporal Tripp about his actions, Gonzalez admitted to fleeing because he believed he could escape and it would be fun. Gonzalez was charged with Fleeing to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer with Disregard for Safety, a third-degree felony carrying a potential 5-year prison sentence. He was subsequently transported to the Marion County Jail.
