"Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire." St. Catherine of Siena
When St Catherine wrote those words it was part of a book she wrote titled “Dialogue of Divine Providence”
It was written in the 14th century, between the years 1377 and 1378. This work is considered one of her most significant spiritual writings and offers profound insights into her understanding of God's providence, the nature of sin and redemption, the importance of virtue, and the journey of the soul towards union with God.
So instead of me starting yet another series, by the way, I would love someone to start doing separate series on my podcast to change it up a little but until they do, I guess you will have to settle with me. Boy if that isn’t enough to encourage someone to take over the Mic I don’t know what is.
I digress.
“Dialogue of Divine Providence" presents a conversation between St Catherine and God. The dialogue explores various aspects of the spiritual life, focusing particularly on God's providence and His plan for humanity.
In the dialogue, St. Catherine seeks guidance and understanding from God on topics such as the nature of sin, the importance of virtue, the role of suffering, and the necessity of surrendering to God's will. Through this conversation, she delves into the mysteries of faith and explores the ways in which individuals can grow closer to God and live according to His divine plan.
The dialogue emphasizes the importance of trust and obedience in the spiritual life, as well as the need for prayer, humility, and detachment from worldly desires. St. Catherine encourages readers to seek God's will in all things and to trust in His providence, even in the midst of trials and difficulties.
Overall, "Dialogue of Divine Providence" offers profound insights into the spiritual journey, providing readers with guidance and inspiration to deepen their relationship with God and to live according to His divine plan.

The Mystical Body of Christ: The dialogue considers the interconnectedness of all believers as members of the mystical body of Christ, emphasizing the importance of unity and charity among Christians.
St. Catherine of Siena's writings on the Mystical Body of Christ are deeply rooted in her mystical experiences and her understanding of the Church as the mystical body of Christ. Here are some key aspects of her teachings on this topic:
Unity and Communion: St. Catherine emphasizes the unity and communion of all believers in Christ, whom she sees as members of His Mystical Body, with Christ as the head. She teaches that just as the human body is composed of many parts, each with its own function, so too is the Church made up of diverse members, each contributing to the overall health and well-being of the body.
The Church as Bride of Christ: St. Catherine often employs the metaphor of the Church as the bride of Christ, drawing upon biblical imagery to illustrate the intimate and loving relationship between Christ and His Church. She teaches that Christ's love for the Church is unconditional and sacrificial, and that the Church, in turn, is called to respond to this love with fidelity and devotion.
Spiritual Communion: St. Catherine emphasizes the spiritual communion that exists among believers in Christ, transcending physical boundaries and divisions. She teaches that through the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist, believers are united with Christ and with one another in a profound and mystical way.
The Church Militant, Suffering, and Triumphant: St. Catherine also reflects on the concept of the Church as comprising three states: the Church Militant (believers on earth), the Church Suffering (souls in purgatory), and the Church Triumphant (saints in heaven). She teaches that all members of the Mystical Body are interconnected and dependent on one another, and that the prayers and sacrifices of the faithful can benefit the entire body.
The Role of Love and Charity: St. Catherine underscores the importance of love and charity in the life of the Mystical Body. She teaches that love is the bond that unites believers with Christ and with one another, and that charity is the hallmark of authentic discipleship. She encourages believers to imitate Christ's selfless love in their relationships with others and to strive for unity and harmony within the Church.
Overall, St. Catherine of Siena's writings on the Mystical Body of Christ offer profound insights into the nature of the Church and the spiritual communion that exists among believers. Her teachings continue to inspire and challenge Christians to deepen their commitment to Christ and to one another as members of His Mystical Body.
The Journey of the Soul: St. Catherine explores the soul's journey towards union with God, highlighting the stages of spiritual growth and the challenges encountered along the way.
The Final End: The dialogue concludes with reflections on the ultimate goal of the spiritual life – union with God in eternity – and the joy that awaits those who faithfully persevere in their journey of faith.
While this outline provides a general overview of the themes and topics covered in "Dialogue of Divine Providence," I recommend reading the actual text during lent for a more detailed understanding of St. Catherine's teachings.
